Five Star Rating
For the book “Across Five Aprils” I give it a two star rating. This is because other than the dialect (That I had a hard time to read and understand) it was a fair book. It was written well and had very descriptive words. But it is just hard for me personally to read a book that has a southern dialect.
This book is written for teenagers around the age of 14. Many young adults could read this but I think that the level would be premature for anyone over 17 years old. This is also written mostly as an informative book for students and teachers learning or teaching about life during the Civil War.
In “Across Five Aprils” Jethro Creighton (Nine year old son) is forced to grow up to fast due to his father striking ill and the Civil War forcing him to fight for himself. His family is falling apart and to try and get it back together he writes to Ab. Lincoln. In his letter he asks for the return of all the soldiers unharmed. In the end his sister marries and moves away, his dad heals somewhat and all the soldiers are returned by order of Ab. Lincoln.
The author of the book does very well in using descriptive words. But lacks where not repeating comes in, many times in the book the same subject is ran over several times.
